Master's Message

Born March 16, 1968 and raised in the North End of Hartford Ct. I can say I have the distinct pleasure and responsibility in making sure we serve the city that our lodge has a home in. I am extremely humbled and elated that the brothers of Excelsior Lodge No.3 have elected me as their Worshipful Master for the ensuing year 2017/2018. I pledge to the craft and to my Ct masonic family that I will do all that I can to take E3 to the next level and to represent masonry in a just and upright way.   I promise that our journey this year will be fruitful and educational.  As we embark on this journey I will need your help in keeping to this year’s Motto of “Lets Aspire to be great in all we do”.

My experience thus far in this great organization has allowed me to witness brothers becoming better brothers. These transformations is the driving force that keeps our members grounded and dedicated to the service of our community. Excelsior Lodge will continue to pour out into our communities with the resources that we have. We will be selfless, and continue to sacrifice our time and money for the needs of our people.

My role as Master of the Lodge this year is to continue to set the craft to work and give good and wholesome instruction when needed. I will do this by continuing to push and encourage our brothers to constantly attach themselves to positive ideas that help our community. Myself along with the brothers of Excelsior Lodge No.3

Pledge that we will make a difference some way, somehow in theses streets. We will sacrifice our time and money to help, aide, and assist our brothers and sisters who are in need. Internally I have committed with making the transition from last year’s administration to this year’s administration as smooth as possible. The craft will work diligently to complete and receive our 501c3, Increase our membership by selecting great candidates, and setting another 5 year goal/vision to best help and serve needs of the craft as well as the community. Specifically one of my goals is to complete the task of making our Lodge Technologically competent and ensuring that all our brothers will be trained and proficient with the use of our website, scanner, and use of social media. These systems are crucial in the development and success of the lodge in the future.

The Grand Architect is the supplier of all our needs and it’s because of his benevolence and blessings to this lodge that we are able to do what we do. I truly believe because we are a lodge that gives and pour out to the community with that good work, true work, square work, that serves the needs of Gods people, we will continue to receive the blessings from the Deity that has been  bestowed upon us. Excelsior Lodge will continue to provide Faith, Hope, and Charity to our communities.

I conclude with this. A FAITHFUL brother once told me “Life is Light, the more life you live the more light you shall receive, the more light you have the more light you shall offer”.  Excelsior Lodge is a beacon of Light whom we live to share and shine it upon others.” In everything we do we will aspire to be great at it”. We look forward to working with our community leaders and anyone willing to do the work that God has set before us.

Sincerely, Worshipful master

HISTORY OF EXCELSIOR LODGE NO. 3

Twenty six Prince Hall Masons, residing in the Hartford area, petitioned Most Worshipful Grand Lodge of New York to open a Lodge in Harford and was granted a warrant.  The warrant was dated May 14, 1859 and was presented on May 26, 1859.Designated as Excelsior Lodge No. 16, the first installed officers were Henry Nott, Worshipful Master,Holdridge Primus, Senior Warden; David Smith, Junior Warden; Jeremiah Jacobs, Treasurer and John F. Rodney, Secretary.

Early records indicated that in 1873, there was a growing sentiment that the best interests of freemasonry could be served by forming a Grand Lodge in Connecticut. On September 9, 1873, Excelsior No. 16 sent out a committee, Frederick O. Cross, R.B. Mason, and James H. Ralston to communicate with the several Connecticut Lodges to determine their feelings and interests on this matter. After several meetings, delegates from Widow’s Son No. 10, New Haven, Eureka No. 15, of Norwich: Doric Lodge No. 33 of Bridgeport and Excelsior Lodge No. 16 of Hartford, a final meeting was held on November 3, 1873 in Hartford where The Most Worshipful Grand Lodge of Connecticut was instituted. The four (4) Lodges returned their original warrants to The Grand Lodge of New York and new warrants and new numbers were issued by the newly formed Grand Lodge of Connecticut. Excelsior Lodge was renumbered to 3.

From 1859 to 1937, the early meeting places of Excelsior were many. In 1937, the Lodge held its’ meetings at St Monica Episcopal Church, 33 Mather Street in Hartford. In 1954 under the able leadership of Worshipful Master George N. Brown, Excelsior Lodge No. 3 purchased the property located at 2 Mahl Avenue, our present site. On June 8, 1954 Most Worshipful Grand Master Haskell B. Holman and his entire cabinet officially dedicated the converted Jewish Synagogue as a Masonic edifice. This has been Excelsior’s home for the past 57 years.
